Is Blogging Necessary to Your Internet Business?
Friday May 30th 2008, 9:54 pm

Almost three years ago - We used to keep in-touch with your
customers using phone calls, email messages and face to face
meetings. Today the world has altered. Clients require even more
continual updates, yet it’s almost impractical to meet with
every business contact on a routine basis.

Thankfully, Blogging has appeared to the salvation. Setting up a
Blog on your web site - and having a comparable RSS feed - means
you will be able to keep in continual touch with your clients
and possible customers. Moreover you don’t have to contact them
and they can get your most recent news without having to visit
your web site.

Consequently how does this all operate? A Blog is really a fancy
name for a web page that gets updated continually. It’s nothing
special. There are various methods concerning writing ‘Blogs’,
however they are nothing more than computer programs which allow
you to easily update a web page. Far and away the simplest way
to set up a Blog is with a website-titled blogger.com.

Nevertheless, for keeping in touch with your customers, RSS is
the key. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. What this
means is that your Blog be able to be automatically delivered to
clients who want to read it - you don’t need to send it to them
and neither do they have to come and pick it up. All they need
is the address of your RSS Feed and their RSS Newsreader can do
the assignment for them. There are many RSS readers available
and new web browsers combine the capacity to read RSS feeds and
keep them updated.

Any time you add new content to your Blog, the RSS Feed
automatically gets updated in everyone’s Reader program or web
browser. Which means you are guaranteed to stay in contact with
clients and prospects. You don’t have to do anything other than
show the content. Likewise, you don’t face the problems of email
filters and anti-Spam programs blocking your email. However,
people tend to read RSS Feeds because they have subscribed to
them whereas they tend to ignore non-urgent emails.

At the same time you can recognise, there are certain advantages
to Blogs and RSS Feeds. But it doesn’t stop there. Search
engines love them. That’s because Blogs supply fresh and new
content - Exactly what searchers are looking for. Consequently
the search engines are actively driving Blogs higher up the
search engine ranking. This means if you don’t have a Blog for
your business, you are severely shortening your chances of a
high search engine ranking. You need a Blog nowadays to get
noticed by the search engines.

Hence, Blogging is required. Not only does it help improve your
web presence; it also means you can keep in contact with clients
and prospects more smoothly. And all the marketing research you
can find will inform you that keeping in normal touch with your
customers is a significant part in gaining additional business.
So get ready to Blog!

Trademarks - What You Ought to Know
Friday May 30th 2008, 8:28 pm

Trademark law affects every business in the United States. Don’t assume that your new business name, new product name, slogan or logo has not already been used commercially OR trademarked!

No business name may be used in any one of the following cases, IF there is a conflict or similarity in sound, appearance or meaning & industry:

  • A Federally registered trademark anywhere in the U.S., or
  • A State registered trademark in any state they do business in, or
  • Used within same geographic trade area with “first use” Common-Law protection.

There are over 2,500,000 Trademarks, and over 16,000,000 commercial Common Law trade names in use. ANY existing Federal Trademark, State Trademark or commercial Common Law use takes precedence over your new business or product name, IF there is a conflict or similarity in sound, appearance or meaning & industry.

When you create a new business name, product name, slogan or logo, you will begin to establish your legal rights to your name in the geographic trade area where you do business based on Common-Law usage.

However, the question is: Is your trade name truly available?

It is a company’s obligation and it is in their best interest to enforce its marks. Trademark owners have up to six years to find and order businesses to change any infringing trade name.

Infringing trademark companies could face costly attorney bills ($200 to $350 hour), immediate renaming of their company or product, recall of products, forfeiture of profits, re-marketing of the new name, and marketing change-over for a new name, including logo, signs, corporation, forms, checks, packaging, yellow page listings, web site, etc.

Comprehensive research is truly a need for any new business name, new product name, new slogan or new logo.

Are you Looking for a Financial Planner?
Friday May 30th 2008, 12:53 pm

We all need a little advise every once in a while. Sometimes I find that I need someone to bounce ideas off of. When it comes to money, many of us are looking for confirmation that we are on the right track.

Others of us can’t even get in the general area of the track!

Whether you are financially wise or a little uneducated, a financial planner can be a great advantage. Why do people turn to financial planners? They may simply need advice for a specific situation, or even continuous advice over a long period of time. Others have no interest in learning the ins and outs of investing, how to select individual stocks or how to choose insurance policies. Others have very little time to spend taking care of their finances. Anyone having constant trouble meeting financial goals should consider seeking a financial planner.

The financial planner will help you assess where you are and how to get where you want to go. He or she will see where you are on the map and tell you which turns to take to get to the treasure.

Good planners look at the big picture. They don’t just look at right now and what is spent each day, but they take into account investing, taxes, insurance issues and general money management.

The key is to find a qualified financial planner that you can look up to. You want someone who is excited about their work. They have a true passion to help you.

You can find planners in many places, from brokerage firms to your local bank. Many will help you, but will charge a fee. Make sure that you know what the fee will be in advance of your first session.

Take the time and interview several different planners. Look that they are certified and have a good education backing their advice. One of the best places to find advisors is in your friends and co-workers.

Your first interview with the planner should be free. Take a list of questions you may have. You should be comfortable, listened-to and smarter when you leave. You need to make sure that the advisor’s philosphy matches your family’s style.

Don’t forget to ask how the planner charges. You should be comfortable with the method used. It is recommended that you don’t choose someone who could push you to a certain stock just to get a commission. You should try to look for a fee-only advisor, if possible.

Make sure that you do a thorough check before you give any personal information. Ask to see the planner’s state and federal licenses. If they are a stockbroker, they should be able to show you a Form ADV and CRD records.

The fees charged will vary. Most planners charge a median fee of $100 per hour. Some charge $700 for a complete financial plan, or $300 for a retirement plan. Again, be sure to discuss charging before disclosing any information. You want to be sure that you can completely trust someone before handing over your financial details.

Venture Capital Jobs
Friday May 30th 2008, 2:25 am

People spend a great deal of time on the job, and it is important, especially in venture capital to design jobs so that individuals feel good about their work. This requires an appropriate job structure in terms of content, function and relationships.

The focus of job design is on the individual position or on work groups. First, individual jobs are enriched by putting tasks into natural work units. This means putting tasks that are related into one category and assigning an individual to carry out these tasks. A second approach used in venture capital jobs is to combine several tasks into one job. For example, rather than having the tasks of assembling a water pump carried out by several people on the assembly line, workstations can be established with individuals doing the whole task of putting the unit together and even testing it.

Also, establishing direct relationships with the customer or client can enrich venture capital jobs. A systems analyst may present findings and recommendations directly to the managers involved in the systems change rather than reporting to a superior, who would then make recommendations to top management. Prompt and specific feedback is built into the system whenever appropriate. Venture capital jobs can also be enriched through vertical job loading that increases individual’s responsibility for planning, doing and controlling their job.

Similar arguments can be made for improving the design of jobs for work teams. Jobs should be designed so that groups have a complete task to perform. Moreover, teams may be given authority and freedom to decide how well the jobs shall be performed, giving the groups a great deal of autonomy. Within the team, individuals can be trained so that they rotate to different jobs within the group. Finally, rewards may be administered on the basis of group performance that tends to induce cooperation rather than competition among team members.

Blow Their Socks Off Online!
Thursday May 29th 2008, 4:06 am

Perhaps one of the complaints I have with most internet marketing sites is that they all have a typical look. They say the same things with a similar font, and highlighter. It’s almost like there is some mediocre web designer somewhere who is making a killing!

At the height of the first internet craze while business fundamentals where tossed to the wind, companies were certainly innovative. Ideas were the currency, and a great idea - long before execution, could make you millions. It wasn’t ok to simply have a site, you had to stand out. Sure they had more sizzle than substance but now we have some stuff under the hood but little “Wow!” factor.

I challenge you to step away from the computer, quite trying to duplicate someone’s success story. It’s great to know that such success is possible and the methods and best practices of those who did it, but chart your own path! I bet a few readers would rather lead the pack than simply join it.

With so many sites and tons of content, simply being another site hoping to share a part of the money pot is - boring. If you are going to put in the effort - why not do something outstanding. Let me take a few steps back. It’s important to take baby steps when you are starting, and those steps may not be innovative or ground breaking, but let your vision be out of this world.

Walt Disney was very non-traditional in his thinking. Many business geniuses are ridiculed early in their carets. The press doubted the potential of Disneyland - they called it “Disney’s Folly”.

If you have a crazy idea that you dare to share - expect some ridicule. Imagine telling family and friends that you are going to start an internet business where you give everything away free. That’s right, free. That’s what a small company called Hotmail set out to do with their email platform. They were first, they were free and these isn’t anyone reading this article who doesn’t know someone with a Hotmail account or at least heard of it.

Hotmail understood what would be outstanding in the late nineties. Take a service that people pay for, improve upon it and give it away free. They sell ads on the site, so many that Microsoft decided to get in the action and rather than compete, simply bought them out and repackaged it as we now know it.

The “find what people are paying for on the Internet and give it away free” concept is still good, but to be wildly successful you may need something more. What would that be? That’s the million dollar question, rather if you come up with the answer you may stand a chance of turning that idea into a few zeros!

Having said all this, you have to start somewhere - even better, start with someone who has show some success, so find a mentor who has shown some success, so find a mentor and learn the ropes. Then jump in the ring with the intention of scoring a knockout!

Tips For Cooking Low Carb
Wednesday May 28th 2008, 10:21 am

If you are committed to the low carb way of eating, but also craving some of your old comfort foods you may still be able to satisfy those cravings with a little bit of creative substitution. Some of the foods that you used to know and love, have a low carb alternative available - the taste might be a little bit different but you will soon get used to that and be well on your way to happier and healthier eating!

Here’s some tips you can use to make your low carb cooking easier and tastier:

1. Make low carb bread crumbs for breaded foods. Foods like chicken Parmesan and stuffed peppers need to have a bread crumbs to have that full taste. While you may be able to buy low carb bread crumbs, you can also make them by using low carb bread. Simply toast the low carb bread in the oven on a cookie sheet. Once it is hard, grind it up in the food processor or blender.

2. Use soy flour or bake mix. When you need to use flour for baking or coating breaded foods, substitute soy flour or a bake mix like Atkins bake mix. You can convert your favorite recipes that use white flour to use these.

3. Use low carb chocolate bars for cookies and muffins. Now that you’ve converted your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe using soy flour, you don’t want to put in those high carb chocolate chips. Chop up a low carb chocolate bar into small pieces and use that instead.

4. Use Splenda instead of sugar. Recipes that call for sugar can be modified to use Splenda instead. It is much lighter so you will have to expirement with it and it may not work for everything but if does bake up nice for the most part.

5. Make great smoothies with low carb yogurt. Ok, well it’s not technically cooking, but if you love smoothies you can make them with low carb yogurt and fruit. Just make sure you use fruit that is low in carbs and the whole fruit not the juice as the fiber will help keep down the net carbs. Check my site below for a list of low carb fruits. Add a dash of vanilla or flavored syrup to the smoothie for added flavor.

6. For a great low carb pasta substitute use spaghetti squash. We all know that low carb pasta tastes horrible so why not try a food that is low in carbs and natural too. Cut the squash in half and bake at 400 degrees F for about 40 minutes. The squash will scrape out in strings and gives the texture and feeling of spaghetti. Trust me, it taste a lot better than the low carb pasta and has about 7 grams carbs per 1 cup serving.

Lee Dobbins is owner and editor of Low Carb Resource a site which features articles on low carb and low glycemic index eating and where you can find a collection of low carb recipes

Management: Can Your Business Run Without You?
Wednesday May 28th 2008, 7:46 am

If you are a business owner or a business owner to be, let’s examine this scenario.

Like other people, you are so excited when you first started your own business. But after a few months, you come to realize that you work longer hours than what you expected…and you even have to work on weekends!

You feel more exhausted than you used to be and you start to have doubts whether you should start your own business in the first place.

You are suffering from, what Michael Gerber says, entrepreneur seizure. Michael says that most small business owners were used to be “technicians” before starting their own business. For example, if you are good at baking, naturally you’ll open a bakery shop.

When you, the technician, become business owner, you bring in the details of a technician to your business. Technicians look at things in a very detail manner. That explains why you end up doing everything yourself.

You want to make sure that you give the best service to your customers. You can’t or you don’t want to depend on other people to deliver the work for you. You probably don’t even trust your own staff.

That’s why, until one fine day, you ask yourself why you are so tired.

Under these circumstances, more often than not, your business cannot run without you. You must be there in order for your business to run. You don’t have a single chance to walk away from your business, let say to go for a vacation.

Do you want to create a business that ties you up and there is no freedom for you at all? The answer is definitely a big no.

To overcome this problem, learn from the highly successful McDonald’s. When you go to McDonald’s, you don’t meet the owner there. You only see a bunch of part time workers who mostly are high school students.

McDonald’s is in every corner of the world. But the owner is not there!

Amazing.

Did it come to your mind that why McDonald’s is so much successful than your neighborhood burger stand even though it’s run by high school students and without the owner around?

Because McDonald’s has designed an effective and efficient burger marketing and distribution system. A system that is so simple that even a high school student can follow.

Back to your business, you can emulate the success of McDonald’s to run your business without your presence as a business owner…with the mind that you want to franchise your business.

That is how you should look at your business and that is how you should run your business.

Think about it, do you want your business to be the next McDonald’s or just a burger stand along the roadside?

If you want your business to be the next McDonald’s, you must learn how to run the business without you. Only by doing this, you can make a big fortune from your business with the power of leveraging.
