IT Consulting Career: Steps to Take Before Opening Your Doors
Monday July 28th 2008, 5:47 pm

You need to prepare for your IT consulting career. In this article, you’ll learn about whether business plans, certifications, and ficticious names are important for an IT consulting career.

Is Certifiation Necessary for an IT Consulting Career

Generally, with small businesses, not being certified is not going to hold you back. In other words, it doesn’t matter a lot to the typical small business owner.

It only becomes a real big issue when you are selling to an IT team manager in large small businesses. Yet, for most people you should get an entry-level certification, but you don’t need to sit through 6 or 8 tests to get an entry-level certification.

Are Business Plans Necessary for an IT Consulting Career?

It’s generally a good idea to have a business plan but don’t let a lack of one hold you back either. Sometimes people think that their business plan needs to be like a Shakespearean play and go on for hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of pages.

You should put together a simple 4-page business plan. You’ll want to look at all different aspects of competitive issues, growth, and payback, positioning and marketing strategies. You might want to sit down and spend like a three day weekend to develop a very detailed business plan.

Are Ficticious Names Important for an IT Consulting Career?

A fictitious company name is just a matter of saying that you are not going to do business by just your first name and last name, you have decided to pick a company name like ABC computer Solutions of West Palm Beach or whatever.

Pick something that exemplifies what you do or what your main strengths may be. You should have a business name picked out before you start marketing because people will take you a lot more seriously in your IT consulting career.

The Direct Marketing Challenge: A Tale of Two Households
Sunday July 27th 2008, 3:16 pm

Imagine a retailer in the process of determining its advertising and promotional strategy for the next year. The retailer knows that there are millions of potential customers, but knows too that not all of them are the right targets for their brand. So, how can a retailer - or any marketer for that matter - identify the right targets for their brand?

Traditionally, marketers have relied on demographics - age, income, geography. But these characteristics can lead them astray.

To get a clearer picture, let’s look at two, seemingly similar, households:

Household #1 has an income of $90K. A married couple between 35 and 54 years old, with two children, they own a home in the suburbs. Ditto for Household #2.

They sound alike but behind closed doors, these families are really quite different. So how can the retailer tell the difference between these two households?

What if the retailer also knew that Household 1 exhibits high spending behaviors: they own a Cadillac Escalade, they took a luxury cruise in the past 18 months, and that they remodeled their kitchen to the tune of $100,000+. Meanwhile, Household 2 shows low spending patterns: they recently purchased their home, they have payments on a Toyota Camry, and they shop at WalMart. Demographically similar but their purchasing patterns are dramatically different.

Household 1 will likely be attracted to more premium brands and have more sophisticated financial services needs. They might even be seeking new sources of credit to support their purchasing habits. Household 2 on the other hand, is likely to prefer more moderate brands. Their debt is likely to be lower and brand takes a back seat to price.

Now that’s actionable information.

But marketers would never know it based on traditional segmentation.

Clearly, even the best marketing models fall short when they rely only on income and other demographics. To make the most of their budgets - and to build their brands - marketers must look at information that provides a deeper understanding of consumer needs, wants, propensities, and ability to purchase. Financial assets, such as stocks and bonds, as well as home equity and transaction history mean a great deal in terms of a consumer’s ability and propensity to buy in specific product categories. And, more importantly, this information has great meaning in terms of the types of brands and brand messages to which they respond.

In the old world, “birds of a feather flock together” segmentation systems were the only systems available to target consumers. Now, armed with more intelligent data on the spending power of households, we can single out those “birds” with the most potential to respond to a specific branding message and to buy a particular brand. So while everyone else is following the flock, marketers utilizing more granular information will be increasing both their efficiency and effectiveness in customer acquisition, development, and loyalty.

How can our retailer integrate this powerful data on spending power into its advertising and marketing strategy for the next year?

Let’s go back to our Two Households.

Household #1 (the big spenders) is watching TV. They see a commercial and take immediate note of a new model for a premium brand. Then they check the weather online, and they see an ad for the premium brand. Finally, they get their mail and low and behold, it’s a direct mail piece for the premium brand they are looking for.

Meanwhile, Household #2 (the value conscious family) is watching TV, but their focus is on an entirely different set of commercials than Household #1, even though they are in the same “cluster.” They also check the weather online, but they see different ads than the first household. And when they open their mail, there is notice of a sale at their local department store.

So much for John Wanamaker’s comment that half of his advertising is wasted - he just didn’t know which half. Today he could figure it out. The fur department would be marketed to one group, lower-priced sportswear to another. This second group would be notified of sales. The first group would be the first to know about new jewelry shipments.

The implications of this information for brand marketers - from retail to financial - are huge. The bottom line is that there are differentiating factors that are not identified by standard demographic selects. Just think what brand marketers could do with more intelligent data on the spending capacity and propensity of consumers!

This information is available today and can be used to create more successful marketing campaigns, more targeted advertising strategies, and a stronger brand. It is the information that successful marketers will use to distinguish between price-conscious customers and those that value name brands. With this information marketers will discover those prospects with the discretionary funds and the interest to buy their products. This is the information that will help a company succeed.

Anatomy Of An Article Submission
Saturday July 26th 2008, 9:25 am

Writing and submitting articles to publishers in order to promote your business, services and products is a wise choice for any entrepreneur. The only cost for this kind of marketing project is your time and, if you want the maximum benefits, the amount you pay your proofreader/editor.

Many people are overwhelmed by the submission process and don’t know where to begin. I have outlined below the ten steps I take with each article submission project. Having a process in place makes organizing submissions so much easier and removes the confusion of where of what to do first.

1. Start by having your article proofread and then add it to your website. Make sure you have a catchy title and a by-line that compels readers to take action.

2. Use a text to html tool to format your by-line so that your URL will appear live when your article is posted on a site. I recommend you use the tool at http://thephantomwriters.com/link-builder.pl

3. Collect the information you’ll need for most submission sites including: title, author name, address, phone number, e-mail, website URL, topic, two line summary of the article, word count, line count, article URL, auto responder address (if available), document file names and 10-15 keywords.

4. Make a list of the type of submission sites appropriate for your article. I use EzineAnnouncer to collect and keep track of my submission list and I always write down the categories that are a match for my article. My latest submission qualified for more than 400 sites but your success depends upon your article topic.

5. Begin submitting to sites that accept articles by e-mail. Never send an attachment unless asked. Incorporate the entire article into the e-mail and include an option for the recipient to opt-out of your list.

6. Your next step should be to sign-up for all new submission sites on your list that require registration. Typically, you have to wait for a confirmation e-mail before submitting. You can move on to the next step while you wait.

7. Submit to all sites you have registered for and to all sites not needing registration but offering a submission form.

8. Check your e-mail, confirm your new accounts and visit those sites to add your article. Keep track of your login and password for each site.

9. Update your submission list by removing or correcting bounced e-mail addresses and URL errors. You will also need to add your new submission sites to your list.

10. Create a report to keep on your computer with the name and URL of the sites you used for submission. Update this list when you submit your older articles to newly discovered sites.

Create your own submission process by building on the steps I have provided and you will find your submissions taking less time while helping you to become more organized.

Furnishing Your Home Office

There are a wide variety of choices when looking to find the perfect home office chair. It is quite possible to find a chair that offers good ergonomic support and also perfectly matches your home office décor.

It is most important to find a chair that it is comfortable for the user. Many chairs feature adjustable parts that enable an individual to attain maximum seated comfort. Good lumbar support helps to prevent discomfort or injury as a result of sitting for a long period of time. A thick cushioned seat is an important feature when selecting a home office chair. It is much easier to be productive in a home office if one is free of the aches and pains that can be associated with being seated.

Once a home office chair is selected, be sure to read and understand the instruction manual that accompanies the purchase. The manual will offer suggestions on how to make appropriate height adjustments to the seat, arm rests, and back support. It is critical to make the proper adjustments for your individual body type to attain proper sitting posture while working. Maintaining a proper sitting posture increases productivity and helps to prevent back strain and possible injury. An additional feature that may be added to a home office chair is a tilting head support that can help to reduce neck strain. If the adjustment mechanisms seem to be faulty, the chair should be returned or replaced.

A home office chair with a sturdy five-prong, swivel base will allow a user to easily turn the chair as needed to multi-task. Quality castors will also allow the chair to glide effortlessly across the floor when necessary. Remember to choose a home office chair that offers comfort and support first. Once these criteria are met, you can choose a color that it matches your new curtains.

Is Looking At Pornography The Same As Adultery?
Wednesday July 23rd 2008, 6:27 pm

Pornography has snuck into our homes like Satan did with Eve in the Garden of Eden, tempting even the purest of heart. Some people have never thought about looking at porn before they had a computer, but now it somehow repeatedly gets in their view, and oops it happens.

There are a few really bad apples out there that revel and delight in tossing immoral imagery into our faces. Whether we read about these lusty desires in our Spam email or see it on popup banners, we’ve all come face to face with it through our computer. Most of us don’t think twice about deleting porn from our email and in fact, we try to get popup blocker to stop the harassing banner ads.

Since porn is tossed out recklessly everyday in front of our face, eventually someone is going to click on it. It might be your husband, your wife, or your teenage son.

The bad apples are overjoyed! They work for Satan. Satan tells them sneaky and conniving ways how to do it, and make it more enticing. The bad apples comply because they want everyone to be depraved like them.

The problem begins when a person is tempted into viewing this garbage and they do not apply any moral ethics they might have on a godly foundation. The worldview of what morality is in grave error. If you base your belief system on something that is sinful, you will become in bondage to that particular sin. That is how Satan gets people involved in his work. They serve him by being a slave to sin.

Because porn repeatedly shows up on our computer in one form or another, we eventually give into it out of curiosity and say, “But one time won’t hurt”. In reality, folks, it does hurt. It hurts yourself and your loved ones tremendously.

“You have heard that it was said, “Do not commit adultery. But I tell you anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Matthew 5:27,28

1. Lust is an unhealthy and sinful desire that takes a person away from that which is right and good. It does not matter if it is lusting after strangers on the Internet or a fleshly body in a secret place. To yearn for the flesh of another person other than who you are married is wrong thinking taking over your mind and eliminating the natural goodness that resides in man.

Satan knows that by getting you to think and envision the lusty images in your mind first will entice you to desire it. Once you take a peek, you look again, and again, until you can’t seem to get the immoral imagery away from your mind, and you become ensnared within it. If you think long enough, you become what you think. God says we are not to even THINK about these things in our mind.

“Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes, for the prostitute reduces you to a loaf of bread, and the adulteress preys upon your very life”. Proverbs 25, 26

You are worth more than a loaf of bread, aren’t you? If you continue in your wrong thinking, you will turn moldy, and then no one will want you.

2. If the act of adultery is wrong, then so is the intention. It is considered mental adultery and thus a sin! To be faithful to your spouse with your body, but not your mind is to break the trust that is so vital to marriage.

Pornography is easily justified in the minds of those who view it. They have broken a code of ethics to validate in their minds that it is okay to view it. Pornography for many is more justified than the physical act and if they get caught looking at it, all they have to say is, “well, at least I didn’t have an affair.”

This kind of thinking is wrong and is in total denial. Denial is the opposite of acceptance. If you can’t accept that what your doing is wrong then you are in denial. The Internet only enables those who are tempted to continue in their addiction. Satan instructs the bad apples to get smarter and smarter in their different ways to put it out to the world. That means you have to fight back harder to eliminate sexual immorality from your life.

“It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God.” 1Thessalonians 4, 3-5

Viewing Pornography and getting off on a temporary rush is only a symptom of a much greater problem. Lusting after the flesh of heathen strangers is bad enough, but this lustful desire also defiles the body, mind, soul, and marriage. In my book, it is the same as having a physical affair.

How can I stop looking at pornography?

The power to rid yourself of temptation and to remain faithful comes from what you believe. Therefore it does not rest in you alone but in your Creator. If you have been unfaithful it is because you do not have the foggiest idea how to utilize the tools (gifts) God has given you.

Loyalty to ones spouse is a part of the giving process that you learn through allowing God’s love and forgiveness into your heart and mind. When you accept what the Truth is, you can actually give of yourself and do it freely. It’s really that simple. Accepting is on the same line as humbling oneself. If you humble yourself to God, the one and only true director, you are giving yourself to God. Once you actually release your errors to God, He will rid you of temptation.

For those of you with a conscience, I say don’t kick yourself too hard. You made a mistake and looked at porn. Pick yourself right back up and start all over anew. I say the same thing for those who have had an affair. Just because you were weak once does not mean, you are a weak person. You are what you believe to be true. Your potential is much greater than you allow. God will give you the power to cease and desist all tempting situations in your life, and become the person you were intended to be.

But you have to accept and believe in God as you source.
God hasn’t condemned you yet. It is not too late to turn your life around and come to your full potential. Let go of Satan’s hand and take a hold of Christ’s hand. Don’t condemn yourself!

If God is your source, and he is, that is where you came from, why do you look to the world (Satan) for reassurance of self? If the world is where you look for truth, you will believe what the world says, and probably be weak in your sin again. As with any addiction we are powerless to defeat it on our own.

When we fall into weakness, essentially, we’re like a confused lost puppy unable to find our way home. We do not have a map to help us search for the lost treasure. We’re probably not even sure why we are unfaithful and some of us remain in weakness. We have decided that society is our home, and society tells us that unfaithfulness is acceptable. Which, on the opposite end is what God says is not acceptable. As I said earlier, when you accept what you see in the world as truth, you tempt yourself into adultery and immorality of all kinds, which is not truth, but a devilish lie told by Satan.

It is God’s will that all marriages be built upon the rock of loyalty and when you remain steadfast and loyal to your spouse, even through the hardships, you are allowing God to give you the understanding you need to remain faithful. By trusting in what God says for your marriage, you are less tempted to stray from the marriage, whether in the physical act or through pornography.

Therefore, you must stop looking to society for the answers. Faith comes from believing in what you cannot see with your eyes, bringing those beliefs into the heart and acting upon them with passion. Having and utilizing the power of faith is an individual matter that is gained by your own personal relationship with God. Make God you source!

It is not to late to come out of Sodom & Gomorrah. You do not have to base your opinions and thoughts on the ideas of sinful character. You can find your way home.

An Often Overlooked Secret of Marketing and Negotiating for Real Estate Investors Looking for Deals
Wednesday July 23rd 2008, 4:20 am

When you call sellers, what do you say? When you sit down to write a marketing postcard to find deals, what do you write? When you go to negotiate price and terms, how do you present it?

These are scary situations and it is not unusual to be at a loss for words at such times. In fact, you may avoid these situations all together just so you don’t have to face the overwhelming fear.

I want to help you erase that fear and find the words that will give you confidence to call sellers, write advertising, and present offers. The concept I am about to present is fundamental in developing a successful marketing message.

Have you ever read an ad like this?

“The Braun® Multiquick Hand Blender offers a 200-watt motor, stainless steel shaft, five-blade chopper attachment, and aerator head.” (Karen Thackston 2004)

Why in the world would I buy the Braun® Multiquick Hand Blender after reading this description? Why should I care about a 200-watt motor or a stainless steel shaft? I am sure this is an accurate description of the product’s features, but why do I care? What if it read like this?

“The Braun® Multiquick Hand Blender is a priceless tool for any cook with a busy schedule. Its powerful motor enables you to chop, whip, puree and blend with lightning speed. Its stainless steel shaft holds up to years of use without bending or breaking. The Multiquick’s five-blade attachment gives you the ability to finely chop or grate even the hardest cheeses and nuts with ease. And the specially designed aerator head incorporates air into the liquids and sauces you blend, making them light and fluffy. You’ll create delicious meals with ease and be out of the kitchen in record time.” (Karen Thackston 2004)

OK. So if I want to blend at lightning speed and make my sauces light and fluffy or if I want to finely chop the hardest of nuts without breaking or bending my blender, then it sounds like this is the appliance for me.

What was different between these two descriptions? The first only listed features. The second communicated the benefits. The first is more about the product. The second is more about what is in it for me.

A feature is simply an attribute of a product or service. A benefit is what/how the feature adds value to the customer. Successful salesmanship communicates benefits.

Let me give you just a couple more examples.

“Open 24 Hours” is a feature.

A benefit that speaks value to your prospect is, “When your pregnant wife craves pickles and ice cream at 3 a.m., you know where to get it.”

Here is a real estate example:

“We buy houses subject-to” is meaningless. Try this: “I can take over your payments starting next month and help you avoid paying two house payments when you move.” That speaks to what the prospect wants & what keeps him up at night. Communicate your benefit in a way that brings emotion, fear and desire to the surface.

Now think about what you tell someone when they ask you what you do. Do you just say, “I buy houses”? Or do you say something like, “I buy houses in ten days or less without closing costs or cleanup for the seller.”

Do you see the difference? I often say that you are not in the business of buying and selling houses. When it comes to your customers/clients, when it comes to marketing, when it comes to negotiating, you are in the business of stress relief and solving impossible problems.
With that in mind, what are the specific benefits that you offer? Here are five types of benefits to consider:

1. Convenience: People love to save time, energy, and effort. Can you make someone’s life easier and more convenient?

2. Economy: People respond well to saving money or increasing how much money they have. Show them the money.

3. Peace of Mind: We all have a tendency to seek pleasure and avoid pain. People like to relax. Can you relieve their stress?

4. Ego: Can you appeal to the human desire for recognition or better image?

5. Fun: People need a break. People like to form memories. People don’t like to be bored or constantly work. Can you provide a diversion?

Think about each of these categories. What benefits can you offer a seller or buyer in each of these areas? Use meaningful specifics when you write benefits. Don’t just say that you can buy their house fast. How fast? How much money can you get them?

To take it one step further, which of the benefits that you offer are unique to you? The key to cracking the marketing code and attracting volumes of leads and deals is to answer this:

“Why should your prospect do business with you over any and every other option available to him/her?”

If you have a good answer to this question, your business, marketing, and negotiation will become tons easier and you will increase the stream of money into your bank account significantly. This is the message that you must communicate.

The answer to this question lies in the benefits that you offer that are unique to you. This answer to this question is what is called a Unique Selling Proposition.

By better understanding and communicating the benefits that you offer, you will become a powerful salesperson. You will find that your marketing and negotiating become significantly easier bringing massive returns in your investing.

Jason Van Orden was the President of the Salt Lake Real Estate Investors Association in 2004. He also teaches investors marketing systems to find more deals and make more money with a minimum investment of their time and money. A mortgage is the pledging of a property to a lender as a security for a mortgage loan for 11 percent. Different lenders charge different fees. And of course, each loan and each borrower are different. Although most mortgage experts say that rates 10 percent are pretty much the same wherever you go, give or take this tiny 10 percentage. Alzheimer’s Disease And The Care Provider
Saturday July 12th 2008, 3:11 am

Alzheimer’s Disease is somewhat different from many of the other neurological diseases. Alzheimer’s disease is the only pathological source that can short-circuit, and wreak havoc not only on the victim, but also affect the care giver in ways I’ve not seen in any other disease.

In fact, one could say the way Alzheimer’s Disease develops and affects the victim is unique. This unique road leads to stresses and strains on the care giver that are also unique. Assistance and resources for the care giver is just as important as getting medical attention for the patient.

Who Is The Care Giver?

Most often the care giver is the spouse, or family of the victim. In this case, the care giver not only cares for, but loves the victim very much. The care giver can be someone who sits or stays with the patient for certain durations of time throughout the day or week. Many times, I’ve seen great numbers of family members provide coordinated efforts when caring for the patient.

When observing care givers and families caring for a patient with Alzheimer’s, I’ve seen certain characteristics that are unique to this disease and very disturbing.

I’ve seen cases where, although the patient was suffering from Alzheimer’s, it seemed that the family suffered somewhat to a greater degree because of the fact that the patient could no longer remember things and wasn’t aware of most of the strains and stresses developing daily.

The Care Giver Suffers Along With The Patient With Alzheimer’s Disease

For instance, in one specific case a woman was losing many of her memories and deteriorating at a steady rate. Although our therapists would work with her and try to build functional skills physically, and mentally, she seemed to not be aware of her decline and was therefore, in a way, spared the suffering and depression that came along with her decline. However, the patient’s family suffered greatly because they were watching their mother, and spouse, decline daily.

In this case, the family confided in me that they feel as though their mother, and spouse, is slowly becoming a stranger. Although the family, and loved ones, realized that this is a pathological process and the patient could not help what was happening, it was difficult for hurt emotions to not factor in the situation and add to the stresses.

Since the patient commonly doesn’t know what is happening during the Alzheimer’s Disease process, to the outsider or analyzer, it would seem that the family suffers significantly more than the patient only because the patient isn’t as acutely aware. Because of this decrease in awareness, the patient is spared the mental anguish that accompanies the steady rate of decline.

The Closest Distant Strangers

Alzheimer’s disease causes many innocent victims and families to become distant strangers because all of the precious memories that are slowly taken away from the victim. While these memories are not taken away from the family members, greater strain results from a feeling of alienation. Many family members feel that it’s as though the precious memories were taken away from everyone involved because the memories can no longer be exchanged and enjoyed between the victim and family members.

In another case, the family felt a little guilty because of the things they had to resort to on behalf of their loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. In this case, the family had to slowly take away things from the patient daily for safety purposes. First they took away everyday items like razors for shaving, toothpaste and tooth-brush, then mouthwash, until the spare roles of toilet paper had to be taken away. This was because the patient was flushing entire rolls down the toilet without realizing what was going on. This patient’s family was particularly disturbed because the Alzheimer’s Disease victim was someone who always took care of them, looked after them, and someone who was well respected in the community. This family loved the victim very much. They felt guilty because the patient didn’t deserve to be treated in this way. However, they were forced to take these measures, because they had no choice. So it is with most other Alzheimer’s Disease patients and family members.

Alzheimer’s disease indeed affects everyone within the family and even friends of the victim. The emotional strain can cause changes in lifestyles and relationships that if not addressed and treated properly, can cause damage to the loved ones.

There Are Resources For Families of Alzheimer’s Disease Victims

There are Alzheimer’s Disease support groups, support functions, counselors, and people to help families of victims who suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease. Physicians are beginning to analyze in the literature that when Alzheimer’s Disease develops, counseling and support for the family members are indicated, just as antibiotics are indicated for a bacterial infection.

If you suffer or are suffering from the damages that Alzheimer’s Disease not only has on the victim but on the family, there are people and places that can help you. These people can offer practical tips on how to cope and deal with your specific strains and stresses. Getting the proper help that you need when caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s Disease is just as important as our loved ones getting proper medical attention. In fact, it’s just as important. Because, if you don’t take care of yourself physically and emotionally, you will have greater difficulty caring for the one you love.
