The Origin of Playing Cards
Saturday August 30th 2008, 5:57 am

Playing cards made their way to Europe from the East. They appeared first in France and then in Spain. The reason for the belief that they appeared first in Italy is that the design on the cards closely resembles the Mamaluke design. The pack of cards consisted of 52 cards with suits of swords, polo sticks, cups and coins. Cards with the numbers one through ten and court cards that included the King (Malik), Deputy King (Naib Malik), and Second Deputy (thain naib).

Persia and India had cards that had 48 cards per deck, four suits, ten numerals and two courts in each suit known as Ganjifa. The number of suits doubled. In Arabia card decks became known as Kanjifah.

When playing cards came to Europe the craze took off. In 1377 they appeared in Switzerland. In 1380 they began to appear in Florence, Basle, Regensberg, Paris, and Barcelona. The rest is as they say history.

Early cards were hand made. The designs on the cards were also hand painted. They were also very expensive. They were used more at the time by rich people due to the cost. The craze reached the poor classes as they became cheaper.

Cheaper versions became available as they were mass produced. These cards were disposed of early. They increasingly became popular across all levels of society. Cards are made of stiff paper and some brands are laminated. They now come in mini cards and large prints for the visually impaired.

XBOX 360 vs. PS3: an in Depth Look
Saturday August 30th 2008, 4:15 am

All gamers are awaiting the release of the Xbox 360 and the PS3. This article takes an in depth look at how the two systems compare.

Graphics:

Everyone has seen an Xbox and a PS2 in action and we are all waiting to see which of the two next generation consoles for the two systems will have the edge when it comes to graphics. We have all seen the screenshots of the games on the two systems but what about actual gameplay graphics. Despite the hot debate, when you look at the numbers the two systems use a different but equally effective method of delivering graphics processing power. The XBOX uses a custom ATI processor with 48 graphics pipelines and the PS2 has a custom NVIDA graphics processor with an estimated 24 pipelines. The numbers are misleading because the PS2 piplines are more powerful than the XBOX pipelines. In the end the two different graphics processors will deliver about the same amount of power, we can expect to see impressive results from both sides.

Games:

Both systems have several franchise titles such as Halo2 for the XBOX and Gran Tourismo for the PS2 that you will see in the next generation systems, but what other games can you expect to see. If you are a fan of genres such as role playing that are dominated by Japanese and other foreign developers such as Square, you should look forward to the PS3. There is no indication that the XBOX 360 is going to gain much more support from foreign developers and buyers than the original XBOX. An article on GameSpot.com reports that only two percent of Japanese gamers are interested in buying an XBOX 360, with sixty percent looking forward to the PS3 and eight percent to the Nintendo Revolution. Overall you can expect to see more games on the PS3 than the XBOX 360, reflecting the selection for the current generation systems. Only time will which console will have the quality of games which all of us are been expecting

Media Type:

Will the media storage type be a factor in the quality of the games? Since PS3 is owned by Sony and BLUray is Sony’s next high definition storage medium, the PS3 games will be stored on the BLUray discs which hold approximately 54 gigs. The Xbox 360 games will be stored on Double Layer DVDs which store 9 gigs. Obviously the BLUray discs can store a lot more data, but at the current stage of game development, any game developed will fit just as well on the 9 gig DVDs, so this is not a major factor but one that may come into play later on.

Processing Power:

How do the two systems compare when looking at brute processing power? The PS3 uses a Cell processor with a PowerPC-based core with seven synergistic processing units while the Xbox comes with a Custom IBM PowerPC CPU with three dual-threaded cores that can handle six total threads at a time. An important comparison to look at is the number of dot product calculations per second the systems can perform. The reason this number is important is because it is used extensively during gameplay in 3d math to calculate various things such as vector lengths, projections, transformations, and more. Both systems are clocked at 3.2 Ghz. The PS3 can handle 51-billion dot product operations per second and the Xbox can handle 33.6. There is a debate over which system has more brute processing power and these numbers can be confusing to the average person, but overall it seems that the PS3 has an edge over the Xbox when it comes to overall processing power.

Media Type:

Since PS3 is owned by Sony and BLUray is Sony’s next high definition storage medium, the PS3 games will be stored on the BLUray discs which hold approximately 54 gigs. The Xbox 360 games will be stored on Double Layer DVDs which store 9 gigs. Obviously the BLUray discs can store a lot more data, but at the current stage of game development, any game developed will fit just as well on the 9 gig DVDs, so this is not a major factor but one that may come into play later on.

Games:

When considering games, you have to look at the XBOX and the PS2. The XBOX is very popular in the US and has a few great franchise games such as Halo, but the PS2 has an international reach and several popular game franchises such as Gran Tourismo that the XBOX has yet to beat. The XBOX 360 will need to appeal to foreign game developers and consumers to compete with the PS3. Only time will which console will have the quality of games which all of us are been expecting

Controllers:

The controllers on the two systems retain the basic shape from the original systems with some modifications. The PS3 controller has the most dramatic change; it has a streamline shape that looks more like a stealth airplane than a game controller. The XBOX controller is basically the same shape as the previous system with a different color scheme. From the pictures released, it seems the XBOX controller will be more comfortable and natural to use. The PS3 controller looks like it would just slip out of your hand but we will not know how the controllers feel during actual gameplay until we get our hands on them.

New Helicopter Design for Your Video War Games
Friday August 29th 2008, 5:56 pm

Using Underbelly Cone with Slots Facing Up On a Helicopter to Increase Payload and Liftoff Force. Picture a helicopter model sitting on top of a funnel. The edges of the bottom of the funnel on the table has an additional lip on it which raps around the edges with a little space between it. At the rotor blades force air under the helicopter into the ground cushion below they are forces into the inside of the cone. As the pressure build under it, it forces all that energy to the helicopters C.G. (Center of gravity). This continues as the helicopter lifts up.

It will cost us about $10,000 to build a prototype of this concept. Using a RC helicopter like one of these. Which will be a smaller model of an existing helicopter. We also plan to use some of the most recent micro helicopter technology as practice versions. We figure a micro version will cost us about $15,000 or less to perfect. RC Type Prototype platform to start tests prior to wind tunnel to prove concept:

http://my.cfanet.com/~scott/rcworld/helis/…lsize/cobra.JPG

Micro-MAV Helicopter Platform starting point:

http://freeenergynews.com/Tangent/MicroAer…/chick_heli.jpg

Unfolded Cone Wing Shape:

http://www.symetrics.com/whatsnew/mav.jpg

Once the aircraft is off the ground, which requires a lot of thrust, the cone unhooks itself and spreads out into the shape of a wing similar shape to a bat. To show you the shape of the wing. Do this: Take a piece of paper and make a circle on it, six inches in diameter. Now cut that circle out. Then pick the center and make a dot, then make one cut into the center. Now fold the circle into itself to make a Yarmulke. Now fold it into a cone. This is the cone we will use. Now unfold it to the original circle. Now make another cut to the center exactly opposite of the first cut. But do not cut it all the way thru, leave half and inch to keep the circle from becoming two halves. Now fold the circle the other way but keep it flat, this is the shape the cone will become in flight. A bat shaped wing. With a little anhedral bowed into the leading edge as it sits under the helicopter.

The manufactured shape of the underbelly cone will actually be the shape of a wing, but hydraulics will fold it into the shape of a cone after landing. The wing will be used to slow decent and also to help with softer landings by adding to the ground cushion while landing.

The cone can pivot at the C.G., which can also help as the transition is made from hover to forward momentum as the collective is pulled up. Since the top of the cone pivots on the bottom of the helicopter the angle of attack in the wing configuration will also be adjustable. During rapid decent the inherent manufactured material will also be somewhat folded so the wings will curl down and will mimic wing tips of a “Swift” bird for high-speed dives. The swift can dive at up to 217 mph.

Now then as it comes in for landing the wing is used as a barrier to trap air underneath for an air cushion, for trouble free landings.

The micro helicopter could be enough to transport a hamster or mouse, even with the small six-inch rotor blades and six-inch wing when extended. We are currently making pictures, artist renderings and a design. There are many uses for this micro helicopter concept for MAV style surveillance and nano or insect size MAVs.

On the larger model helicopters and actual full size human version units, the cusp of the cones slats will act like slots or slats do on Short Take Off and Landing STOL Aircraft. This concept makes a lot of sense for many reasons, we still are working through the types of materials to be used, strengths and manufactured material concepts to provide for rigid shape while flying, but bendable for cone structure yet, strong enough to support the weight of the helicopter. Luckily the vertical strength of the cone can be manufactured as the primary objective, yet the unbent material can be flexible for the wing configuration. Many choice to look at.

Stuttering Stories

Having a stutter can have a dramatic effect on somebodys confidence.

I have met many people who stutter, I myself had a stutter for eighteen years and I now run stutter courses to help people to achieve fluency.

One of my clients once told me about a situation he was involved in. He and his friends went to a bar one Saturday afternoon to have a few drinks. After a couple of pints he went up to the bar to order himself a drink. Unfortunately he found it hard to order the drink and started to stutter. The bar man accused him of being drunk and refused to serve him. He tried to explain that he was not drunk but had a stutter but the bar man said “That’s what they all say”

He returned to his friends who asked him where his drink was. He told them what had happened, this itself was very embarressing.

His friends were very good and one of them told him that he would go to the bar in ten minutes and buy him a drink. He duly did this however the barman later saw the person who has a stutter drinking the drink and kicked the whole group out of the bar.

This is a typical situation people who have a stutter find themselves in.

Another client was stopped by the police in his car. The police asked him some questions. He was very nervous and started to stutter. The police presumed he had been drinking and tested his breath for alcohol.

Are magic mushrooms safe to use?
Wednesday August 27th 2008, 7:49 am

One of the most sought out illegal drugs at either college or the university are magic mushrooms that provide a hallucinogenic experience to their consumers. Naturally, this is not the only occasion that these mushrooms are sought and consumed; people who look to have a fun or even religious experience also look for these particular mushrooms.

Magic mushrooms are so because they contain psilocybin, which produces a milder experience that what LSD can, therefore, it is one of the preferred methods of “getting high“; though these mushrooms are rare and often quite expensive. This makes many avid magic mushroom consumers venture into the woods themselves and look and picks their own mushrooms; however, this is never advised, since there always are replicas of these mushrooms that are poisonous to eat and, to the inexperienced and drug avid eye, might seem the right kind

Another quality of the magic mushrooms that makes them so popular is that they do not product a physical dependence though psychological; there might be one especially with such a mild hallucinogenic effect. Though they work inside the body in a manner that is very similar to how the LSD functions, when taking the magic mushrooms it is important that you are healthy and that you will not be driving, leaving your home or operating machinery or even working.

Harmonics Laminate Flooring - Easy To Install And Keep Clean

Harmonics laminate flooring is a great choice to make for your flooring needs when you are building or remodelling a home. Many people today are taking the carpets off their floors and opting for the engineered hardwood of laminate flooring. You get the same elegant look of solid wood at a fraction of the cost. Even though you can buy glueless laminate flooring, experts with Harmonics laminate flooring recommend that you glue it to the subfloor anyway.

When you choose Harmonics laminate flooring, you do have to purchase an installation kit. If you do use the Harmonics glueless laminate flooring, you can use the foam padding for the underlay. Using this type of laminate flooring from Harmonics means that you don’t need an array of tools and you can complete the entire job by just using a cordless circular saw. You do need to use the saw for fitting the Harmonics wood flooring around doorways, by cabinets and for fitting in the smaller pieces.

Even though the price of Harmonics laminate flooring is unbeatable, you should compare it with other brands of engineered wood flooring. When you visit a flooring retailer, there are always small sample pieces of Harmonics glueless laminate flooring that you can examine. Many customers have found that the Harmonics wood flooring does scratch and dent a little easier than that of other manufacturers, but it is still a versatile and durable product. This brand of laminate flooring also comes with a warranty against showing signs of wear. This give you piece of mind knowing that if a problem develops with the Harmonics flooring, you will get the help you need.

When installing Harmonics laminate flooring, it is important that you do install the moisture barrier. This is a barrier so that the moisture from the subfloor won’t come through the laminate flooring and cause any damage to it. Harmonics wood flooring is a great way to increase the beauty and value of your home for a reasonable price. It has the same elegant look of hardwood and it is easy to clean. All you have to do is sweep or vacuum the dust and wash it over with a damp mop. You do have to be careful not to use too much water when you clean it. This also applies to the Harmonics glueless laminate flooring. Since laminate flooring is not made from solid wood, the extra moisture can get in between the layers and cause bubbles to occur.

Harmonics laminate flooring is available at most flooring retailers. Reasons To Get A Home Equity Loan
Monday August 25th 2008, 2:08 am

Using a home equity loan really depends on what your needs, wants and desires are that prompt you to take the home equity loan in the first place.

The most common reason people obtain the loan is for debt consolidation however other uses include home improvements, educational expenses, unexpected family emergencies, medical expenses and in some cases for big ticket purchases.

As expected debt consolidation is the primary reason many people obtain a home equity loan. The thinking is sound especially if they’re stuck paying anywhere from 17% to 21% in credit card debt. Department store cards are another money eater that using a home equity loan to pay off could be considered smart.

Paying for an education with the loan could prove beneficial in the long run but I’m hesitant to advocate taking out a loan for that reason. The only other reason I could recommend getting a home equity loan would be to pay for a home improvement project that could increase your home’s value and could also make you feel better about your house.

For absolutely no reason would I ever advise anyone to take a home equity loan out to make a big ticket purchase. It simply doesn’t make financial sense in the long run. As far as for medical reasons or family emergencies I would take that case by case to determine if it would be a smart decision.
