Recognizing Luck

We know that poker online is surely a game of skill and luck. The word luck though has certain meaning to most people that actually hinders their ability to exploit it. When people think of good luck, they think of the long shot jackpot, like hitting the lottery. In online poker, players often think of luck as being dealt a monster hand or hitting the case card on the river.

This is a very limited perspective on luck and blinds players to other ways they can leverage lucky opportunities. Experienced players learn to recognize these lucky circumstances and exploit them.

For instance, if you are in the cut-off seat, to the right of the button, and everyone folds behind the blinds, a lucky opportunity may be there for you in that the players ahead of you had the bad luck to get raggy cards. The field is already narrow, and now you can play a speculative hand with a raise. You may take the blinds right there.

Another lucky spot is when a pre-flop raiser checks after the flop. That signals weakness, perhaps your opponent’s suited cards or medium pocket pair missed the flop entirely. When a player acts weak, that could be your good luck

Look for luck at the bubble in a casino tournament when the players typically tighten up. This situation can offer an opportunity to seize some chips.

Luck is more that getting a monster hand - it is the ability to recognize lucky situations and exploit them.

$5 6-Max Shootout

Cake online poker has a bunch of sit and go tournaments set up with added incentives: a free ticket to a $10,000 prize pool event for the winners. A particular one I played in was a 6-max shootout poker online tournament. The buy-in was $5 and there were 36 entrants. The top 5 players would get paid, and the top 2 players would get free tickets to the $10k event on top of their cash winnings. Shootouts are multi-SNG events. Essentially, you play a series of Sit-and-Go tournaments which condense the winners into another SNG. In this shootout, only the winners advanced, brining the 6 winners of the first SNG to a final poker online table SNG of 6. Since the shootout was the length of 2 SNG’s, each player only started with 1000 in chips, as opposed to the normal 1500. This 2/3 stack made me tighten up play a bit in the beginning. I’m a fairly adept 6-max SNG player, and I usually cash (1st or 2nd) with almost always at least getting to the bubble. So, this worked out as usual, but I got the better of my opponents when the blinds were big and I won the first SNG. In the 2nd SNG, only one player would walk away with nothing. The obvious obstacle was not to be 6th place, which meant that staying out of the way early was objective #1. I got heads up and took 2nd. This got me $48 and a ticket to the $10K. It’s always nice to win, but it’s even nicer to get something for free!

Are Low Stakes Better for Average Players?
Tuesday December 15th 2009, 10:23 am
Filed under: Enjoy, Lady Luck, Universe Of Games

There is a common idea in the poker world that the low stakes games are full of fishes. These are the games that most people recommend for new poker players because the competition will be less steep. The idea is that any skill at the low stakes games will instantly conquer the fishes. Many people go so far as to say that anyone can make money at the low stakes game. Like most things in life, however, this may be too good to be true. Low stakes may not actually be the best place for a player with average skills.

Let’s look at the flaws of the low stakes tables. They typically have less competition than their higher stakes counterparts. This would mean that an average player could cultivate a false sense of superiority and never realize the holes in their game. They would basically never improve because they would never be forced to realize that they had room to improve. Another significant problem with the low stakes games is that average layers often tend to take their low skill game to the low stakes poker table. They play the exact same way, just in a different setting. What about that seems like a good idea?

When Does Seating Position Matter?

As if you didn’t already have enough to worry about when playing poker, new research shows that you need to consider your seating position as part of your strategy. There are tons of articles out there that tell you how to play based on where you sit and how to adapt your skills if you move seats. You could write a whole book for example on the differences between early and late positions in Texas Holdem online poker. I’m going to let you in on a little secret. There are only specific situations where you need to worry about seating position. Sometimes you can ignore it all together. The most important thing about seating position is to be able to recognize when it matters. In casino games like Texas Holdem that post blinds seating position is a big deal. The responsibility to post the blind rotates around the table. Where you sit determines how much money you need to give up right off the bat. In some games, mostly of the stud variety, seating position does not mean anything at all. Let’s look at seven card stud as the counterpoint to Texas Holdem. In this game the play starts with the player with the highest valued visible card. It doesn’t matter where they are sitting at the table. Before you stress over seating position, remember that it only matters in certain situations. Relax and review the game before you get worked up over where to sit.

A Sad Week for Online Poker Legalisation

It was a very sad week for advocates of legalized poker online. A U.S. appeals court upheld the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in a unanimous 3-0 ruling Tuesday.

The 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals rejected both internet gaming company iMEGA’s argument that the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was too vague and that it violated privacy rights. The ruling didn’t come as a surprise to legal experts following the case.

“Anytime you challenge an act of Congress that doesn’t involve pure political speech, you’ve got an awfully large hill to climb,” explained Buffalo State business law professor Joe Kelly. “They (iMEGA) constructed the best argument they could have, but it was an extreme long shot.” One of the arguments that iMEGA focused on was that the UIGEA violated privacy rights. The online gaming trade associate cited two cases — Lawrence v. Texas and Reliable Consultants Inc. v. Earle — as examples of how the UIGEA infringed on privacy.

I have long called for the legalization of poker online across the world. It makes absolutely no sense that any government would not allow its law abiding citizens to engage in their God-given right to play poker online. Hopefully we will look back on all of this one day and realize how silly it allw as.

The End of the Overlay?
Wednesday October 14th 2009, 12:55 pm
Filed under: Enjoy, Lady Luck, Universe Of Games

With late registration extensions up to an hour instead of a blind level, will there ever be a poker online tournament with an overlay anymore?

In the good old days of online poker, if you missed the start time of a tournament, you were shut-out from it. This was great for big guaranteed prize pools. If less people joined the event than was needed to generate the guarantee, then there would be some free prize money put up by the site, known as overlay.

You could wait until the last few minutes, or even seconds, before a tournament began and jump in when you’re sure the prize pool would not be covered by the number of entrants. Now it’s usually not that huge of a number, but anything free is nice.

After a little while the sites started adding late registration for online poker tournaments, anywhere from a few minutes to a whole blind level. This allowed latecomers the chance to jump into a game once it was already started, and gave the site a better shot of fulfilling their guarantee through player-registration. Lately, there have been a lot of tournaments with hour-long late-registrations! This means that players have a whole hour to get in late. While they are at an obvious disadvantage coming in with a starting stack at increased blinds, they are boosting the prize pool considerably. This not only accommodates for the guarantees, but it often exceeds the guarantee by quite a bit. While the prize pool is now jacked, it can be disconcerting for players who registered from the beginning and have no idea how big of a field they will be playing against until a whole hour is up.

Aside from there not being and free money anymore, some sites are laying restrictions on the rake-back rewards programs. If a player has played in events with an overlay, there is some formula they use to decrease some of the funds you get kicked back. So, not is there very little free money left out there, if you’re every lucky enough to find it you might be getting penalized even if you don’t return a profit. I guess it’s true now: nothing’s free.

Becoming a TAG
Thursday September 17th 2009, 9:59 am
Filed under: Enjoy, Lady Luck, Universe Of Games

There are two styles of profitable online poker play out there right now Tight Aggressive and Loose Aggressive, and both can be dominating at a poker online table if you know how to use them right. For most of people, they have solid preflop game but their post flop game leaves a little something to be desired. For that reason, nearly every poker online coach out there advocates the TAG style of play when you’re first starting out. They do this for the simple reason that with the types of hands you’ll be getting into with this style, you’re post-flop game will improve over time and you can decided for yourself if you want to loosen up or kept playing tight poker. Now the TAG style is not to be confused with the rock. The rock will only play premium hands. Top 10% Usually form AA, KK, QQ, AK, AQs, AJs, and maybe A10s and JJ. As a TAG we’re going to be opening many more pots with many more hands but it’s all position relevant. You’re main goal is to be raising every hand you’re deciding to play. There will be very few instances when you flat call. When you get a premium hand, you’re either going to open the pot with a pot sized raise, or you’re going to three bet (reraise) if you have a strong hand and position. If you’re playing your strong hands aggressively, but only your strong hands, when you do go to showdown, you’ll start building the table image of being a player who only shows down strong hands and soon people will pick up on this and you’ll start getting people folding to you just because they’re afraid of your raise. And you’ll start getting a lot of action from the loose players and calling stations, which you’ll most likely be able to Cbet off of a pot on the flop or if you’re feeling really frisky, double barreling on the turn. And if you’ve been taking notes, you’ll see that the TAG style is fairly straight forward. And when you have a bunch of amateurs trying to make moves at lower stakes or calling with any two cards, I don’t think you’ll have hard time seeing that’s it’s easy to make money at these stakes with straight forward play since the trickier players will be playing middle or high stakes anyway.

Poker Terms: ‘Overbet’
Monday July 27th 2009, 12:52 pm
Filed under: Enjoy, Lady Luck, Universe Of Games

In poker, overbetting is generally referred to as when a player bets into a pot with a bet that is more than the size of the pot itself. This is also no different in poker online. This kind of move can generally be interpreted in two vastly different ways, the nature of which often depends on the way the hand has proceeded.

One instance in which a player might overbet the pot is when they have a hand they think is ahead but that they feel is also vulnerable, and they do not want their opponent to continue drawing. The overbet, then, is designed to price the opponent out of the hand and take it down without having to survive further drawing.

Overbetting can also be interpreted, with certain types of players, as a bluff. Obviously, a bigger bet in general is a harder bet to call, so certain types of players will make an oversized bet in an attempt to steal the pot. Overbetting has become so predictable in this manner even in the casino, that many players will try to bluff in less obvious ways.

In general, overbetting is a questionable poker practice that will at least get your opponent wondering what is going on in the hand: “Either he has a monster or he has nothing.”

Blue Rays of Light, the Smurfs

Ah, going back to my childhood there is nothing that I love the most that sitting in front of that TV set and watching my favorite cartoon the smurfs. Really it was a lot of fun, the Smurfs brought a lot of different aspects and subjects to the table, whether it was the magic pot from papa smurf, or the corkyness of the smurfette, and my favorite of all the grumpy smurf, or at least that is what I think his name was, it was the guy who always hated everything, but he really meant how much he loved it.

The smurfs have been around for a while, I know this because my Dad at the time was the person that really got me to watch this little guys, at first I really found no real magic but as I cozy up with the rest of the family to watch, I really started to love the adventure, the fun and the true magic of this blue and fun creatures. It really was great to see how this little people could live in mushroom homes and have really so many different personalities who had a lot of joy in their lives, even thought they were threaten every single day by the evilness of gargamel and his cat. As humans today living in one of the toughest times the world has ever encountered, we should reflect on this and try to make the better out of our lives, live happy and love, it really is best for your health and happiness. If it is your figure you worry about like the smurfette, take Acceletrim weight loss to drop weight fast.

Maximum Poker Profit, Minimum Investment
Tuesday December 09th 2008, 12:42 pm
Filed under: Enjoy, Lady Luck, Universe Of Games

It’s one thing to hold the best hand and know you’re about to win. It’s another art entirely to extract the maximum value from it.

One of the ways to do that, as counterintuitive as it may sound, is to check when you have the nuts.

Let’s take a look at a professional hand on the subject. The player: Antonio “The Magician” Esfandiari. Circa: WPT championship, LV April 2008. The blinds are 50-100 and Esfandairi is in late position, two poker players limp in ahead him. Four after. He limps as well. Seven players.

He’s holding A-J off. The flop comes K-10-Q two hearts. Giving the Magician the nut straight. But there’s a flush draw on the board. One of his opponents limped in with K-2 off, and has paired with the board. Check comes around to Esfandairi, who bets 550.

Five folds, and now it’s just Esfandairi and vs. the Pair of Kings. At this point, he’s only got to worry about getting the most money in the pot.

Unfortunately for Esfandairi, he doesn’t succeed in this poker hand. The turn comes 5 clubs. Esfandairi bets 1625, nearly 100% of the pot.

And his opponent calls. River comes 4 of spades. If there was a flush draw, it’s officially busted. Esfandairi now know’s he’s totally set.

So he checks. His opponent also checks. It’s unfortunate in this situation that he decided to call off his poker betting. After a strong lead out and a high continuation bet, he had set the stage to keep up with the betting. Even if his opponent couldn’t have put him on the straight, the bet itself would be more consistent with a high pair or a flat out bluff.

The fact that he checked on the river, reeks of trickery and trying to make a move. And in this case his opponent was astute enough to catch on.
