Myths About USA Gymnastics Level 4 Gymnasts
Not Originally Designed for Competition
Level 4 is the first official level of compulsory competition in
the USA Gymnastics competitive system. The Level 4 vault and
bars, beam and floor routines are substantially similar to the
routines in the previous 8-year compulsory cycle, which ended in
2005. During that cycle, Level 4 was upgraded to official
competition status and gymnasts were allowed to enter official
USAG competitions up to the State Championships. But the
routines and especially the vault were originally designed
simply as training devices, not for competition.
The Level 4 Vault Mat
This is most obvious with the Level 4 vault - a handspring onto
big stack of mats. In order to add this “vault” into regular
competitions, a new piece equipment had to be designed and
provided at competitions completely separate from the normal
vault horse/table. And unlike any vault at any other level,
gymnasts do not land on their feet in the Level 4 vault
requiring a whole new approach to judging the vault.
You Don’t Have to Compete Level 4
Another common misconception is that gymnasts are required to
compete Level 4 before they can compete in Level 5. There is no
Level 4 competitive requirement before you compete in Level 5.
The only requirement for Level 5 is that gymnasts must pass a
skill evaluation from a skill evaluator with a score of at least
75%. You don’t have to compete Level 4! It is not required!
Level 4 Skills are Almost Never Used at Higher Levels of
Competition
Level 4 skills, especially the bar skills are almost never used
at the higher optional levels of competition. There are 12
skills in the Level 4 bar routine and none of them are ever used
in optional bar routines, except for the casts. On beam and
floor, the situation is somewhat better. About half of the
skills are direct progressions to more difficult skills that may
be used later, but that also means that half of them are not.
The Majority of Level 4 Skills Lead Nowhere
Since the vault, all of the bars skills and about half of the
beam and floor skills are not used later at the higher levels of
competition, it is obvious that most Level 4 skills are not used
ever again in competition.
Level 4 Has Been Watered Down
During the previous 8-year compulsory cycle, Level 4 gymnasts
were allowed to attempt to compete a kip on bars. Starting this
year, you must be a Level 5 gymnast to do a kip in competition.
Level 4 gymnasts no longer need to hit a real cross handstand in
the beam routine, only a handstand. The handstand hold time
requirement on the beam dismount is also less than in the last
compulsory cycle. In short, USA Gymnastics has made the Level 4
routines easier.
Why?
By now, you must wonder why USA Gymnastics has made all these
Level 4 changes. The answer is quite simple and even
justifiable. They are trying to make the sport more available to
more gymnasts. By lowering the entrance level to competition,
more gymnasts may participate in the USA Gymnastics competitive
system. This is not necessarily a bad thing for the sport. It
increases the financial base of USA Gymnastics and the number of
gymnasts competing by a very significant percentage. Some of
those gymnasts may eventually rise to the top of the sport.
What Does It All Mean?
But parents and gymnasts should know that there are other paths
to becoming a high level gymnast other than competing at Level
4. In fact, most of the gymnasts you see on TV were probably not
ever Level 4 gymnasts. If it is your goal to become a high level
optional or Elite gymnast, then you should be aware of the other
paths that are more likely to make that happen.
Count Out the Years
Really good gyms and training programs create high level
optional and Elite gymnasts in 3 - 5 years of daily training.
That is fewer years than it would take to move from Level 4 to
Level 10 (at one level per year) and they are working on harder
skills sooner in their career (which is usually a good thing).
For gymnasts on the Level 10/Elite track competing at Level 4
may be a waste of a year of their gymnastics career.
Special Elite Strength and Skill Development Programs Available
Elite and level 10 gymnasts often use programs like the USA
Gymnastics TOP program and the USAIGC (United States Association
of Independent Gymnastic Clubs) STEP program and competitions or
their own version of these types of programs. The TOP and STEP
programs both concentrate first on building strength and
flexibility and then the teaching of high level optional skill
progressions.
TOP and STEP Programs Work for All Gymnasts
The truth is that these type programs that build gymnastics
strength and flexibility and work on high level skills and their
progressions are really the best training system for all types
and levels of gymnasts. It is, however, possible to participate
in these programs and compete at a compulsory level to gain
competition experience. But by far, it is more important for a
gymnast’s career to develop strength, flexibility and begin to
train on the appropriate higher-level skill progressions.
College Baseball - Who is the Best Ever?
The University of Southern California has a baseball team, the Trojans. The USC Trojans are undoubtedly one of the very best college baseball teams to every play the game. Over 95 of the baseball players from the college level who’ve made it into the Major Leagues played for the USC Trojans. USC has also appeared in 21 College World Series events and has won the most games in the this event as well, 70 in total.
The USC Trojans are also one of the oldest college baseball teams. The Trojans played their very first university baseball game in 1889 on the college campus. Unfortunately, the college team lost this game which may account for the fact that there aren’t any recorded games until 1892. This time, the University of Southern California Trojans won against the Woodbury Business College by a score of 14-3. The USC Trojans had a total of 20 players on their college baseball squad that year and finished it as an undefeated squad.
The very next year the Trojans played 10 games during the college baseball season. However, the USC baseball team appeared to have not played very much over the next four years with only 3 college games being recorded.
Between 1898 and 1902, the USC Trojans baseball team suffered one bad season after another. In 1902 this changed with the arrival of pitcher Rube Waddell, one of the stars of college baseball at the time who eventually went on to become a Hall of Fame inductee after playing on 4 different Major League teams. He was, without a doubt, responsible for the upturn in fortune of the Trojans college baseball team.
The fortune of the Trojans college baseball team was extremely mixed in the pre-World War 1 years and the team was even abolished for a season during 1913. This was to enable the college to focus on track and field sports. Of course the war years led to a decline in all sports, including baseball, but the Trojans college baseball team was fully re-instated in 1920. The University of Southern Californaia baseball team went from strength to strength and was finally rewarded by becoming a member of a college baseball conference in 1927 and they haven’t looked back since.

The Secret to Golf Length
“And when they came nigh to Jerusalem, unto Bethpage Black, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent forth two of his disciples.” (Mark 11:1 K.J.V.) “Verily I say unto you, that whosoever shall have great length on Earth shall have unheard of length in Heaven”, said Jesus to his disciples. And so the quest for great length off the tee began.
Every golfer is searching for the secret to golf. The secret is that there is a secret to golf, and you are about to learn it. Everyone knows that money is the root of all evil. Jesus commanded everyone to sell all of their possessions and to give all of the money to the poor. Are there any Christians on Earth today? When Jesus entered the Temple in Jerusalem he “began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, and he said, ‘Is it not written, My House shall be called of all nations the House of Prayer? But ye have made it a den of thieves.’” (Mark 11:15-17).
During the time of Christ, golfers used wooden golf balls and wooden golf clubs made from the hickory tree. Then, in the early 1600’s, the featherie golf ball was invented. The featherie golf ball was a hand sewn cowhide bag stuffed with goose feathers and painted. Because it flew so beautifully, it lasted for 200 years. In 1848 Reverend Doctor Robert Adams hardened the sap of the gutta percha tree into latex and invented the gutta percha golf ball, which replaced the featehrie golf ball from 1850 until 1900, when rubber took over. The rubber balls lasted until 1930. Today’s balls have a titanium metal core with many layers of surlyn and balata coverings. Golf club shafts evolved from hickory tree wood with persimmon tree heads to steel shafts and now to graphite shafts with very large titanium heads. Despite the incredible advances in golf club and golf ball technology, the handicaps of male and female golfers have not gone down, according to noted author and custom club fitter Steven Passarell. How could this be? Here is the answer.
Famed Psychiatrist and 9 Handicap Sigmund Freud explained the human ego: “The human ego is the part of the cerebellum concerned most with feeling like a great human being. In many cases of over developed cerebelli, the human being begins to believe that in a prior life, he was the Messiah Jesus Christ, or Napoleon Bonaparte, as a defense mechanism to the haranguing of over critical parents and the resulting wounded ego.” (Austrian Journal of Medicine Volume XXIV, page 69). A mere 2,500 years ago in Gehenna, just south of Jerusalem, in the valley of Gehinnom, the Jewish and non Jewish people of the land of Canaan used to sacrifice their first born male children on fire altars to the God Baal aka Beelzebub aka Satan. The drummers beat their drums loudly to drown out the screams of the burning alive babies. Golf club and golf ball manufacturers have known forever that golfers were perfectly willing to sacrifice accuracy and $500 for added distance off the tee. Their first clue was when golfers in the long drive competition would throw down their driver after their massive hit, and beat their chests with both fists, like the apes with which humans have 99% the same DNA.
From the time of Jesus Christ until the time of Jack Nicklaus, scientists knew that the exactly perfect length for the men’s driver was 43″. It didn’t matter how tall you were because God gave taller players longer arms. Every golf club manufacturer from the time of Jesus until the time of Jack knew that if you made the driver shaft even 1/8 of an inch longer, the golfer would hit into the ground, and in an effort not to hit into the ground, the golfer would make swing changes and then begin to spray the ball all over the park. This is why at long driving contests the fairway is the width of a football field and the golfers with their long shafts are still blowing it out of bounds.
In the 1990’s golf club manufacturers began to make the driver shafts 2 and 3 inches longer, 45″ and 46″. They marketed the fact that these golf clubs hit the ball further and golfers did not care if their 300 yard drive flew two fairways over - that made the drive seem even longer. Ladies drivers went from the standard 42.5 inches used by Mary Magdalene and Kathy Whitworth to 44″ and 45″. As Nike Golf made millions selling 45″ drivers, Tiger Woods continued to play with 43″ steel shafted Nike drivers, and Tiger continued to lead in driving distance and piled up major after major playing against Pros who had switched to the 45″ driver trying to match Tiger’s distance. Augusta National lengthened their golf course after Tiger won the Masters at 18 under. Jack Nicklaus and Slammin’ Sammy Snead hit the ball 300 yards right down the middle using 43″ steel shafts with persimmon tree heads. The whole time that Tiger was on his major rampage, Nike Golf refused to make drivers with 43″ shafts available to the public.
Billions of dollars of advertising have gone into convincing the public that 45″ and 46″ drivers are the next best thing to the arrival of Jesus Christ. Taylor Made and Titleist and Callaway and Nike Golf are making fortunes selling these too long shafts, and the PGA of America couldn’t be happier. Their 32,000 golf professionals are making a fortune teaching golfers how to hit their too long woods and irons - a feat impossible for the average golfer, which leads to endless lessons and purchases of golf books and golf magazines filled with golf tips and videos and CD’s and golf swing training accessories. Suddenly, along comes Peter Kessler hawking the Perfect Club, because it goes straight, but the Perfect Driver loses about 75 yards in distance because get this, the shaft is 42 inches. The inch decrease costs the golfer a ton of yardage.
The first big golf company coming out with a graphite shafted 43″ driver with a titanium head, with the new Prov1x golf ball, is going to wipe out the rest of the other golf club manufacturers, and bring the average handicap down by 8 shots, because there is no loss of distance, and the ball goes dead straight. In the meantime men cut your shaft down to 43″ and ladies cut your shafts down to 42.5 inches. There will be no loss in accuracy or distance. Until then, choke up on your driver 2” and watch the ball fly long and straight off that big sweet spot time after time again. Shaving 8 shots off your score instantaneously should be a good thing for your ego and your bank account. This will also speed up pace of play, David Fay. Hasn’t your ego suffered enough humiliation hunting for your $5 golf ball in the trees yet? In our next installment we will discuss how your golf club manufacturers silently de-lofted all of your club heads turning your 9 iron into a 7 iron to make you think that you are hitting your shaft lengthened de-lofted 9 iron farther. Didn’t Jack use his towering ball flight to hold the greens at Augusta? The pros have their clubs custom made. You aren’t using the same clubs they are. Only the label is the same.
Speaking of Jesus, the X factor golf swing has been heralded as a way to improve your distance. It means that you keep your left heel down, make a tiny hip turn and a big shoulder turn to hit the ball farther. A noted former PGA tour player turned orthopedic surgeon, Bill Mallon, M.D., calls this the fastest way to blow out your back and wind up in excruciating life long pain, in his book, “The Golf Doctor: How to Play a Better Healthier Round of Golf”. Didn’t Jack do OK letting his left heel come 2″ off the ground? The surgeon recommends letting it come up even farther to save your back. Harry Vardon’s came up about 5 inches. Jesus recommended three. There is no need to sacrifice your back in your quest for added length off the tee. Try a longer driver, or a new golf psychologist. The only people not benefiting from these long shafts are the golfers. Everyone else, the whole golf industry, is laughing all the way to the bank.

Golf Tips Presents: How To Putt
Putting: Back to Basics
We’re back to putting again. We feel that strongly about it. The average golfer could easily make up 10 strokes a ROUND by putting properly. And it is much easier to practice putting then driving or fairway shots in your house or yard!
The game of golf should be learned from the green back to the tee. That means putting, chipping, fairway shots, and THEN drives. Remember, most shots in a round are from around the green!!!!
The average golfer’s tendency, when putting, is to use too much of their wrists and arms, thus breaking down their wrists through the putt. No! No!! NO!!!! DO NOT BREAK YOUR WRISTS!! First it hurts (ok, couldn’t resist), second, you LOSE CONTROL!!!
To become a great putter, the perfect combination of shoulders and arms should be used throughout the putt. Any wrist action involved is through the motion of the weight of the putter.
During your putt, concentrate on your shoulders really the putting stroke. On the backswing, your left shoulder moves down and your right shoulder moves up, focusing on your shoulders becoming synchronized. Your left wrist should stay nice and firm throughout.
In order to set up the putting grip, first place the grip in the palm of your left hand, and your entire hand around the grip. Place your right hand underneath your left, in a similar palm grip. Overlap your right hand with your left index finger.
Your palms should be opposite to one another, for a nice locked-in feeling. When setting up to address the ball, make sure your eyes are over the ball, specifically your left eye (if you are a right hand golfer).
Bend your knees slightly, and hang your arms over the ball.
Shift your weight slightly forward on your left foot, favoring the left side of your body. Your hands should also be slightly forward in your stance.
Before making your stroke, make sure your arms, shoulders, knees and feet are all parallel with your target line.
Keep all these elements in tact, and you should see improved putting in no time. .
Standard rule of thumb. Five foot putt, bring (sweep) your putter back five inches, follow through five inches.
Why do most putts miss? Because the stance and the putter head are NOT square to the target line (for such cool people playing this game, isn’t the word square used a lot?).
Put this in your muscle and visual memory bank:
Use a square tile floor. Place the putter head along one of the squares, and align your feet using the square pattern of the floor to be, well, square to the target.
Now, take a little peek down the target line. MEMORIZE that look. That is a square look, and that’s cool!
Where Should Your Miss Land??
One of the major differences between the Tour pros and the weekend player is that the Tour pro focuses on where he wants his “misses” to land. For example, if the green is sloped back-to-front, the Tour pro will choose a club that will make sure that he leaves his approach below the hole so that he has an easier, uphill putt for birdie.
You should do the same thing. Instead of just walking off the yardage and choosing the appropriate club for the yardage, take a second to study the green to see how it’s sloped. If it is sloped severely back-to-front, take one less club or choke down on the club a bit.
Or, if it is sloped hard right-to-left, aim well left of the hole (assuming the hole isn’t cut tight to the left side of the green near trouble). By leaving your approach shots on the proper side of the hole, you’ll find yourself three-putting or four-putting a lot less.
