The deal between T-Mobile and Orange has been subject to further delays on grounds of the UK’s regulatory concerns. It aims at creating the country’s largest mobile operator by virtue of holding more than one-third of the market share. The deal, which was initiated five months back in September 2009, is currently subject to scrutiny by the European Commission in Brussels.

However, with rising doubts among the consumer groups and rival mobile operators over the decision-making by Brussels, the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has called for scrutiny of the deal by the UK regulatory authorities and has asked for additional details about the merger from the European Commission.

According to the OFT, the proposed joint venture threatens the existence of small mobile telecom operators in the UK since after the merger T-Orange will become the largest British mobile carrier, with more than 30 million customers and about 37% of the UK’s mobile market. This will lead to a monopoly in the telecom market, leading to higher costs for the consumers and elimination of small players like 3.Thus if the competition does not disapprove it, the deal will transform the entire telecom structure in the UK, with a large customer base moving towards the merged company.

Internet service provider O2 was apologetic after its subscribers once again experienced connection problems, a record third time in recent weeks. Continuation of such problems might put the company’s image at stake and it might end up losing subscribers to other networks.

The issue of O2’s users experiencing connection problems was recently reported by the news site The Register. Customers have complained of their 2G and 3G connections getting rejected by O2’s network even at far-off places like Liverpool and Brighton, which hints that it might not be a local fault. But The Register claims that only “some” users have been affected. The problem has been fixed by O2, but it has not stated what caused the problem.

The first failure of O2’s data connections happened a few weeks back with its customers experiencing problems when a data crash left them without internet, texting and email. The company claimed that the problem had occurred due to faults involved in a GPRS satellite. The problem was fixed and connections were restored in two hours. A company spokesperson speaking on this incident assured at that time that they had already restored connections of a majority of users and would re-instate connections of remaining users soon.

After a few days, O2’s roaming customers went offline again with no data or voice access. Again the problem was solved and a company spokesperson commented that engineers had identified its root and were doing their best to fix connections of affected users. He also reportedly apologised on his company’s behalf for loss of service.

No doubt, the O2 Broadband service is facing a lot of technical hurdles, but it should start working on these problems so that its customers do not have to experience disconnections any more in the near future, if it wants to keep its market share intact.

It seems that there is no substitute for quality customer services as far as the mobile broadband segment is concerned. A YouGov poll was organized in February to gauge the importance of customer service and 2,143 adults took part in it. The responsibility of conducting the research and analysis of this poll was handled by a leading billing and customer management service provider, Convergys. The results were beyond normal expectations, when it was revealed that nearly 17 per cent of the people in the UK preferred to pay that little bit ‘extra’ for improved customer services.

The poll results further disclosed that only 5 per cent of the people preferred an option that promised lower costs but poor services. Similar sentiments were echoed by Jean-Herve Jenn President of Convergys, International, who said that operators could gain immensely in terms of revenue as people were willing to pay a premium for better services.
